Discovery Museum's Perilous Plunge
It’s that time again– dress up in a wacky costume and take the plunge into Humboldt Bay. The Discovery Museum’s 11th Annual Perilous Plunge is on Saturday, March 10, 12:00 p.m. at the foot of F Street in Eureka. Join the fun and collect pledges from family, friends, and co-workers who would gladly pay to see you jump into the bay. Plungers are rewarded with a soak in the hot tub, heated dressing rooms, a long-sleeved t-shirt, hot lunch, Bloody Mary's, and the satisfaction of knowing that brave plungers are helping children in our community. Plunger packets are available at www.discovery-museum.org or at the Museum (501 Third Street, Eureka), (707)443-9694.
Come down to watch the spectacle and cheer the Plungers as they go into the bay. Plunging teachers receive a free field trip to the Discovery Museum. Things get started at 12:00 p.m., with the US Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue Demonstration followed by the Plunger Parade. The HSU marching Lumberjacks will be there to keep spirits and energy high while plungers take the hurdle into Humboldt Bay.
The Perilous Plunge is the Discovery Museum’s only large fundraiser of the year, and all funds go to support educational exhibits and programs for local children and families. Remember, the Discovery Museum raises half of its annual income through fundraisers and donations and keeps 99% of this income local. The Museum serves approximately 10,000 people each year. In 2011 alone, the Discovery Museum offered 168 free programs to the community, participated in 42 community outreach events, ran 108 drop-off programs, led 35 field trips, and served 353 children and their families at Pal Camp.
Not brave enough to take the jump? The Beach Party is on Friday, March 9, 6:00 p.m. at the Wharfinger Building (1 Marina Way Eureka, CA) as it is transformed into a tropical paradise just for party goers. We will celebrate with Hors D’oeuvres catered by Kristin Vogel (Catering Creations), signature Plunge Punch, Live and Silent Auctions and the crowning of the Plunge Queen and King. Once again, all proceeds support the Discovery Museum’s exhibits and programs, including Pal Camp. So, put on your finest beach wear and escape to the Beach Party. Tickets are $40 each (or 2 for $75) and can be purchased at the Discovery Museum or online www.discovery-museum.org.
