Overture in C by Fanny Mendelssohn is a stirring concert opener. Fanny was Felix’s elder sister, and like her little brother was a child prodigy. Imagine how these two must have played together. Fanny was a virtuoso pianist and composed 466 pieces of music. Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 6 was written for the 125th anniversary of the New York Philharmonic. Hanson championed American classical music. Fred Tempas and the tuba are the stars of Concerto for Tuba by Ralph Vaughan Williams. A relatively new addition, the tuba waited a century for its first concerto to be written. This concerto is considered the principal work for the tuba and shows off the (counter-intuitive) agility of the big horn, fast notes exploiting high and low registers, traveling through sixteen feet of tubing.
